Secret Talk

“Secret Talk”
by: Eve Merriam
I have a friend

And sometimes we meet
And greet each other
Without a word
We walk through the field

And stalk a bird

And chew a blade of

Pungent grass.
We let time pass

For a golden hour

While we twirl a flower

Of Queen Anne’s lace
Or find a lion’s face

Shaped in a cloud

That’s drifting, sifting

Across the sky
There’s no need to say,
“It’s been a fine day”

When we say goodbye:
When we say goodbye

We just wave a hand

And we understand.

  1. The poem and the book both use figurative language. It makes me remember how Ellen and Annemarie talked when they had a problem or when they they remembered their happier times. Annemarie's dad talked with her uncle in a secret code so that the Germans couldn't understand what they were saying. For example, in the book the dad says, "Is the weather good for fishing?" it meant that Annemarie's dad was asking if he could bring Jews. They were talking in code so the Germans would not understand them.

  3. It's kind of like when you and your friend tell each other everything. They always help you with Sometimes you can play with your friend sometimes like at the park. Annemarie and Ellen are best friends, and they are like sisters. They go to the same school and after school they go together to their home. Annemarie and Ellen tell secrets to each other and they play together. The book and the poem, "Secret Talk," use figurative language to help the reader to see and understand what the author is experiencing.

  4. Secret Talk is about people who talk in secret, or code, so the Nazis don't know what they are talking about. For example, in the story, Number the Stars, when Annmarie's dad was talking to Uncle Henriek about taking something to him. He asked if the weather was good for fishing. What he really meant was if it was safe to send Ellen a Jewish girl, and his family. They were talking about it in code so the solders don't know what they are talking about, in case there were bugs in the phone lines.

  5. I like this poem because it has figurative language. And also because like the two girls from the poem that are friends they meet and greet each other but with out a word.Like the story of Numbe The Stars the dad of annemarietold uncle Henrick if it weather for fishing for the nazi soldiers that are relocated them can not understand them. The thing that they are meaning is if good if the dad can take ellens parents and her that are jews to take them to a safe place.
